Take the # 7 [ Flushing] subway train to 61st /Woodside $2.00
Go down to train platform below you and take the Long Island Rail Road -LIRR to the Jamaica Station $5.00
Your train will be on the same platform as the ticket office
Get your LIRR & AirTrain ticket at the same time
When you get to Jamaica go upstairs and catch the AirTrain [$5.00 ] to JFK
Allow a realistic 45 minutes to an hour about a third of which will be spent waiting for trains
Personaly I think that this is the easiest and fastest possible way to do this trip

JFK Airport has an airtram that goes from a number of train stations and subay stops directly to the airport and makes a very minimal number of stops. This is very fast and convenient and will drop you off right at the Terminal. I used it a few months ago when traveling on labor day weekend and it was the easiest and most stress free trip to the airport I have ever had, despite being a high traffic travel weekend. You can get information on the Airtrain on JFK's website www.kennedyairport.com. They have a full schedule and information about getting to the train by subay from Grand Central.
With the train, you never get stuck in the frightening NYC traffic that you would encounter with a cab, limo or bus.

Several ways. I believe these is a Port Authority Shuttle Service right outside Grand Central that goes directly to all the three major airports (check their website).

The quickest is jumping on the taxi line outside Grand Central and grabbing a cab to JFK. Can be a mob scene though.

If you want to use the train. Grab the 6 to 51st stop, grab the E train to Jamaica and then grab the Airtrain from there. This is probably the cheapest but longest route. I recommend the Port Authority Shuttle Service but check the website for prices and schedules.

one company runs an express bus to JFK . that or a cab would be best. and like you say 4 p.m. flight you need to be there at 1 p.m. traffic out east end of Long Island is terrible at tmes.
