We are now not allowed to call Halloween, Halloween. In case we upset anyone who isn't pagan. I'm christian and see nothing wrong with Halloween.
We are not allowed to call Easter, Easter, in case we upset anyone who isn't Christian.
We are not allowed to call Christmas, Christmas, incase we upset any non Christians.
Schools are not allowed to celebrate Mother's Day in case it upsets motherless children.
nor Fathers day in case it upsets fatherless children.
nor Grandparents day in case they upset grandparentless children.
Nurseries cannot teach their children Baa Baa Black Sheep it is now Baa Baa Wooly sheep.
Soon it will be Snow White and her vertically challenged acquaintances.
Beauty and the unsocial person.
Are we to give up Red nose day in case we offend Rudolf?
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhh!

Some schools have been told, not asked but told, by their local authorities not to celebrate Mother's, Fathers and Grandparents days. It's madness!
As for the holiday thing. Argh!

Thank you for all your answers so far. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one who thinks things have gone too far.
BTW I don't get this from the papers or any other form of media, it's from immediate personal experience.
I am a single mother and my son desperately would like to see his Dad who refuses to have anything to do with him. However I would never deny other children at my sons school making cards for their Fathers. On which level would that be fair?

"Winter Break" and "Spring Break" make a reasonable amount of sense - given that there's actually several holidays occurring at roughly the same time. It's more of a "give everyone a chance" thing than a "don't offend" thing.
But I've never heard of torpedoing Mother's/Father's Day. (OTOH, I've never heard of Grandparent's Day, so....)
Inclusiveness and fairness can do quite a bit of good, but there are certainly cases of it being taken too far. Unfortunately, there's also cases of the reaction to it being just as bad.

PC isn't what it was intended to be. We need to remember that you can't please all people at all times and just allow our fellow countrymen the freedom to live and express themselves as the First Amendment intended. You would think that the opposite should be going on. We're letting other people play the victim when someone says something that even remotely offends them. It's only hurting our country. Where are all the free thinkers? What happened to "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never harm me"? Now, it's "He said this, and I was upset, so I'm suing him." Puh-leez.
I agree it's gone way too far. But the only people with free speech appear to be the complainers and whiners. If you don't like what someone said, give your own bleeping opinion and LET IT GO....
Thanks for the chance to vent. :-)

The issue is that the Knuckle-dragging Futt Witts DON'T ACTUALLY BOTHER TO ASK IF IT WILL OFFEND.
These gutless Idiots DECIDE WHAT MIGHT OFFEND and then set out their dumb-@ss rules
Muslims, Hindus, Jews etc don not care that we have Christmas, Easter etc.
Black people don't care that you say Black board, Black sheep or Black coffee.
In fact these people and the others you mentioned hold throw up their arms in anger at what is done 'for them' as it makes THEM look bad and fussy and trying to cause trouble.

At work we wanted to have a fun event with software Easter eggs, the hidden programs that do fun little things in programs and on DVDs.
Never happened because they are called "Easter" eggs and was considered 'insensitive'.
We have a Winter Holiday lunch, not a Thanksgiving or Christmas lunch so that we don't offend anyone.
It's really quite ridiculous.

Why would Easter upset non-Christians? It's named after the fertility goddess Oestre. Only in the rest of Europe are derivatives of the word 'Paschal' used for the resurrection feast; and they don't give a squat over a hole about political correctness.
And I think you mean "Snow North-European-Origin and her seven vertically challenged acquaintances"
And as far as Red Nose Day goes, I think we should wait for Rudolph to complain for himself. Now is that a race relations or an animal rights issue, I wonder?
I smile when people use Xmas as a non-Christian alternative, as the X is the Greek "Chi" - the letter used alongside "Rho" to symbolise Christ in Catholic and Orthodox churches.
Just sit back and wait for the backlash, my friend.
In my little market town, they recently tried to replace the Carnival Queen with 'Young Person of the Year' (boys, y'see). The carnival was a flop - there's zero visual spectacle in the revised PC title. This year, CQ was back in all her glory, along with a new Carnival committee.

Talking about christian celebrations does not offend non christians - exactly how many people actually celebrate the religious side of christmas these days

i've heard the christmas one. i think its southampton that changed its christmas lights to winterval lights.
However i have never heard anyone complain or change the name of halloween, easter, mothersday, fathersday or grandparents day. where did you get this information from?
P.S. I think vertically challenged is a much more insulting phrase than a dwarf so i will stick with the dwarf version

what a load of rubbish. halloween is more offensive to pagans as it is an abomination of Samhain.
where have you got these facts from? Schools still celebrate the above festivals- obviously if a class has a child who has lost a mother they would deal with mothersday with care and if the class has a large demographic of pupils from different backgrounds they celebrate different festivals accordingly

PC was a good concept but it's been taken way out of its usefulness and goodness. Now it's just ridiculous. We are going to end up with no traditions, no holidays, no convictions if we allow political correctness to continue to dictate right and wrong, fair and unfair.
