Over the years, I have heard of several incredibly strange stories of people having had their organs cut out of their bodies while asleep, most likely sedated with some sort of an anaesthetic like ether or chloroform. It seems to be mostly a staple of fiction, but I was in fact wondering if there is a realistic basis for such stories. Are there any urban legends about this? (I'm sure that there are a couple) If such beliefs do in fact have a sound basis, what countries do these acts of visceral theft occur in? Is there a secret ring of organ pirates out there? In such acts, do the people behind them leave notes or any sort of a ransom for the subject after the act? What would make an individual prey for such people? What are the organs that are usually harvested (kidney's, lungs, hearts, pancreas), and if so, are individuals killed for these organs and simply disposed of or left to die? Is there anyone with any sort of an experience of such an act, or an attempt at such an act?

According to Snopes.com, this myth is false. Snopes claims it began circulating in 1991 when email was in its infancy. Likewise, the tale of foreign organ heists, which began circulation in 1996. According to the myths, the operations are actually performed by skilled surgeons to provide organs for wealthy clients. If you think about it, you will realize that matching the organ to the recipient is WAY more complicated than to find a likely, healthy specimen and knock him out. If it were that easy to match, we would not have a backlog of people needing organs...anyone could donate. According to the legend, the victim wakes up submerged in a bathtub filled with ice, with a note attached instructing them to lie very still and call 911. There is a telephone on a table beside the tub. These are never things that happens to someone the teller personally knows.....one example is the 1991 story that says "My sister-in-law works with a woman that this happened to her son's neighbor, who lives in Houston." Surely couldn't track that down.
In an effort to put a stop to this nonsense, the National Kidney Foundation has asked anyone who claims to have had his or hers kidneys illegally removed to step forward and contact them. So far, no one has showed up.

Watch the movie "Turistas"...its really good and it just came out not too long ago. The movie is about the trafficking of human organs and it is filmed in brazil. However I am brazillian and I never heard of such thing happening in my country. If it did, it must have happened a long time ago. The reason why people may have done this is for money. Alot of people around the world will pay big bucks for an organ that they may need in order to survive.
Watch the movie, it will answer all your questions, but don't believe in it too much...this type of thing does not happen anymore.

Yes. Most well known black market for human organs are in China, and they are usually government run hospital facilities and prison. Organs are removed without the consent of patients and prisoners after their death.
Organ harvesting was widespread in China and that foreign patients had travelled to the country for kidney transplants. Young and healthy prisoners often had pre- execution health checks and then were shot in the head so the lungs, heart liver and kidneys remained intact.
The sale of human body parts is big business and for the right price the more sinister side of the medical community will supply organs, even if it means having to steal them. In nations that have massive populations, such as China and India, body -parts are worth much more than the lives of their owners.

There was no reason for that fella to answer you so rudely.

Your question is pertinent.

There is documented evidence that this is happening in China with executed prisoners.
