As far as downloading old school punk, I have found the choices to be limited and a vast majority of the available downloads to be live. I have run across some Sex Pistols, Exploited, The Clash, etc.... but you would probably be better off obtaining CD's or vinyl.

I also recommend:

TSOL
Rusimentary Peni
Crass
Decendants
Black Flag
Bad Religion (Before 1990)
The Germs
Buzzcocks
Fear

The Ramones, The Clash, Sex Pistols, X-ray Spex, Blondie, anything by Patti Smith, also there are a lot of really good 80s hardcore bands such as Circle Jerks, Black Flag, Suicidal Tendencies, Bad Brains, etc.

Pre punk bands: Velvet Underground, Iggy Pop and the Stooges, New York Dolls

As for the post concerning these bands being hurt by illegal downloads, I can tell you that most of us Want people to hear our music and don't make much off music sales. If you want to support your favorite band DL the music for free, play it for all your friends so they know about us, then come to a show and buy a T shirt! This is the only way the musicians get their fair cut. Don't just feed the machine!

Clash, Ramones, blah, blah, blah. That's too easy. Try some of these lesser discussed bands that are just as good.

Agent Orange
Dag Nasty
7 Seconds
T.S.O.L.
Descendents
Bad Religion
Fugazi

I'm with Darkwolf on Gallows, great band.

I know a ton! But I also know those guys don't make a ton of money off their music. They feel the download hit harder than most other musicians out there when people get their music for free.
Are you going to pay for the downloads and support the bands?

Clash, Ramones, Dead Kennedys
Also, try Gallows, they're not old, but they are very classic punk style.
