I would tend to say that the majority of Americans do not know there history, and that this holds true of all the irregardless of origin or race.
I do not believe that Africans or Blacks know more or less about history than any other groups of people.

Politics within the black communities. Lot of slaves did not want recall the past. Most did not know where they come from because it wasn't taught.
One is modern politics that will not talk about the french and spanish slaves and how groups in africa rounded up their fellow blacks. Or the arab slave markets in north africa.
Slavery did not start or end with the very short period of North American slavery.

Why do you only perceive an ignorance of a specific area of history among a specific group, when I perceive an ignorance that's pretty general among the population?
Take a look at high schools, are the kids up to speed in math or english or science?
Why single out history?

I believe you're talking about DEEP history. But it seems to me that a lot (not all) of African Americans are still hell-bent on the fact that white people used them as slaves back during the Civil War, and they still haven't gotten over that fact.
For example, the schools in my area are banning the Confederate Flag because it's "racist" when it's openly flown in front of court houses and is a state flag and nationally recognized symbol. Yet the African Americans can wear FUBU attire to school? Which stands for "For Us By Us" now if THAT'S not racist I don't know what it is. It runs both ways.
