Missing socks can be "eaten" by the machine. As the rubber seal wears after countless hot washes, a loose sock can be sucked into the pump, and can damage it.

Check the pump regularly if possible, and place socks in a pillow case or a net laundry bag, rather than loose in the machine.

Depending on the spin cycle most small items like socks go through what is know as the Filionoxic Weber cycle at a discrete RPM, it varies with the machine. This moves the item to the uppermost portion of the machine basket where it slides through via centrifugal force before the basket stops spinning.
If you disassemble your machine you will find all of the missing items.
