I have just recently taken the train from San Diego to San Francisco. I rode a red-eye for fun. Fly, unless you have 13 or so hours to burn.

Situated in Southern California, perhaps not far from the Mexico line, San Diego could be the oldest town in California, started in 1769 and if you intend to know a city with an enchanting natural splendor and a pleasant climate, with slight conditions and plenty of sun with hotelbye you must start. In San Diego you can visit: museums, gardens, Spanish Colonial type structure within Balboa Park, the world popular San Diego Zoo, and the Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum. SeaWorld San Diego is among the city's major attractions, especially for families. It is located across the waterfront in Mission Bay. For most American's SeaWorld has been quite a while family tradition, having existed because the 1960s. Among the highlights are the myriad of shows presenting killer whales, sea lions, dolphins, and other sea life. You will find a myriad of tours from roller coasters plunging into water, to more sedate carnival type trips for tots. SeaWorld is an aquarium that allows for close-up looks at sharks and different sea creatures that may be observed through an acrylic tube, along with touch tanks, and close encounters with dolphins and people of tidal pools.

10 -11 hours driving, or train, twice that long by bus, 45 minutes flying, hitch hiking hard to tell. San Diego has a great transit system. You can go most anywhere, including Mexico but its time consuming.
Noony man recently it took us 3 hours to get from L A to Costa Mesa,we thought we would "never get" to San Diego, its not supposed to take that long, but sometimes it does.

your looking at about a 9-10 hour drive, but since you don't drive, try finding a cheap flight or take the train, a plane ride would be the fastest. LA to SD is only about a 2 hour drive, don't listen to that first guy.

if you don't drive then the best option is to fly. You should be able to get a cheap flight if you book in advance.
Or try a train, have a look at this web site http://www.amtrak.com
