I'm trying to think ahead to next summer for vacation ideas. We don't want to go so far that we have to fly. I'm trying to figure how what the closest beach to St. Louis, MO, where we live, is.

I know that there are beaches associated with the Great Lakes as well, so I'm not limited to ocean areas. Thanks!

Lake of the Ozarks or Lake Michigan in Chicago will be the closest.
Lake of the Ozarks is 170 miles or 3 hours driving time from St. Louis.

Lake Michigan is going to be about 4 hours from St. Louis

It would take around 9-10 hours to drive to the New Orleans area. Around Destin, FL would take about 12 hours and Myrtle Beach, SC would be about 13-14 hours.
Go to this site and type in your starting address and some place you are thinking about going and it will give you the exact amount of time

There is a beach in Chicago along Lake Michicgan, which is about a 5 hour drive. Another option would be Gulfport/Biloxi Mississippi area. Per Yahoo maps, your looking about about a 10 hour drive straight down I-55. Those are really your best options for a "beach vacation". Yes, there are plenty of beaches at smaller lakes and rivers in between both, but I would not count those as "beach vacations".

Lake of the Ozarks is beautiful, and lots to do other than just beaches.

But just for relaxing on the beach I'd think I'd prefer the ocean, which would be a longer trip.

I've never been to lake Michigan.

You said beaches, which could be a lake, river or ocean. I would go with Chicago also. Seems to 1/2 way in between with the Gulf, maybe New Orleans, if you are discounting the Mississippi River beaches.

You could go to Lake Michigan which might be a little closer but I would go to the Gulf Coast - Missippi or Louisiana - good food too and it not as expensive as the north.

Try Lake Carlyle in Carlyle, Illinois. Its a pretty large man made lake, made by the army corp of engineers. They have 2 small beaches, but they are pretty clean. Water is usualy dirty or muddy though, but not polluted.
