No Name, it's a school in Maine. It's been all over CNN and Fox news for the last two days...

It is not a public school's responsibility to provide prescription drugs to students. What's next, Ritalin for the hyper, Prozac for the depressed? Sexuality and birth control are the responsibility of the parents. That story was the final straw for me - my kids (which I haven't made yet) will NOT go to public school.

Note this from the article: This week, the health center asked the committee to make birth-control pills available to high school-aged students who were still in middle school and unable to access the contraception available at the high school, said Portland School Committee member Robert O'Brien. So we're really just talking about people who have been held back (academically) but not held back (wacka-chicka-wacka-ly).

I agree, liberalism has gone off the deep end. It was bad enough when they started supplying condoms. But if you want a real scare, check out AB777 just signed by Schwarzenegger in California.

66260.7. "Gender" means sex, and includes a person's gender
identity and gender related appearance and behavior whether or not
stereotypically associated with the person's assigned sex at birth.

In other words, if a 13 year old boy decides that today I'm a 13 year old girl that's okay. I can't be discriminated against. I can use the girl's bathroom or gym showers...

That's just one example of the idiocy of the left that is coming to a school near you. This crap usually starts in California before it heads East.

I think the whole issue here is not the birth control thing, which is appalling, but the fact that the parents can't see what meds their own kids are getting due to privacy laws!

That is ridiculous! If you approve of parents not being told of what medical treatment their kids are getting due to privacy, you are whacked!

I went online to check my daughter's diabetes prescriptions. The web site said I couldn't check it. She's my minor daughter and on my insurance!!!

This privacy thing has gone way too far when it comes to kids (minor kids).

I say this because the parents in this school have the right not to approve their daughter going to "the Health Clinic." But that means she can't have aspirin dispensed, either. Or, like my daughter, can't get her insulin shots.

So I would have to approve my daughter going to this "clinic." But they will not tell me what they give her in there. I can't say "only give her insulin." That violates her privacy. It is retarded!! (ohoh, I may be slapped by the Liberal Yahoo censor board for discrimination and hate speech.)

the article i read said its not the first school district to do this, its been done a number of times accross the country, but mostly in high schools and only in a few middle schools

It is deplorable that any government institution would consider giving non-emergency, voluntary medical treatment to children without the consent of the parents.

That is a gross intrusion into the rights of the parents to raise their children as they see fit.

It's completely unacceptable and violates every tenet of the Constitution.

I would remove my child from that school too. Birth control pills are hormones, and giving them to 11 year olds who may not have even started menstruating yet could harm them medically. Completely apart from the fact that I would not allow a school nurse to prescribe medicine for my child without my knowledge. Will they be giving out anti-depressants next? If my daughter can't bring motrin to school to take if she has a headache or sprained ankle, how do they justify this outrageous travesty?

Prevention is better than cure.
When will people stop pretending that THEIR children are saints?
Whether you like it or not, (or try to deny it) the teenage years is when humans experiment with sex.
Didn't you?

Would you prefer that your 17 year old daughter gets birth control help at school, or comes home pregnant one day?
Be honest.

never heard of it -- schools cannot dispense prescription medication unless the parent have a prescription and have entrusted the prescription to the school nurse to dispense. It would have to be a medication that is required during he day -- not birth control parse.
