I saw part of a program last night on the subject of abortion. I've always believed that a woman should have the right to choose what happens to her body, but seeing some of the images of late abortions shocked me. I still believe it's a woman's right to choose, but should late terminations be banned? In the UK they can be performed up to the (someone correct me if I'm wrong) 24th week of pregnancy, should this be reduced? And if so, to what? Should 12 or less weeks be the maximum? Surely that's plenty of time to decide whether or not to go ahead with a pregnancy?
I still believe abortion is a woman's choice, and I don't advocate banning it completely. If it's going to happen it's needs to happen safely and legally.

Oh after I found out about late term abortions I was completely against it.

I agree it's the woman right, and I'm not against abortion, but have you seen partial birth abortions? Terrible. They actually stick a pair of forceps in the base of the skull... That's murder... that baby felt that... they just stabbed a baby in the head to kill it...

I would never consider and abortion, but I believe it's the woman's choice...

yes they should have limits on how long you have to terminate...

Most abortions in this country occur in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. The 24 week one was an exception to put the case against abortion, particuarly at later stages of pregnancy.

No, I don't think late terminations should be banned. There will always be a couple of cases that slip through the net and the time taken to obtain one on the NHS can take some time.

Trouble is, if you get a pro-life doctor, or anyone who wants to stand in the way... plenty of stories about women who visit the GP and ask for an abortion as soon as they find out, like at 5 weeks or so, and the amount of obstacles that the doctor puts in her way means that shes 16-20 weeks by the time she gets the abortion. With the best will in the world, some woman are still going to end up with late-term abortions

Personally, I agree that late term abortions should be banned. At 24 weeks a human being is formed and you can feel movement. If a woman is going to have an abortion, she should know by 12 weeks if she is pregnant or not. Personally, I could not and would not have an abortion. I was pregnant and my child had a birth defect. My doctor and family encouraged abortion at 23+ weeks. I am so thankful I did not listen to them. They were wrong and she is a 17 year old Honor student with a very bright future ahead of her.
However, I agree that it is a right of women everywhere to choose. But late term abortions are abhorrent and I think that doing this in late term will mentally scar all but the most hard hearted of women forever.

"never judge a person until you have walked a mile in their shoes"

i am glad that 'gawd' above me added that link, for it demonstrates clearly why SOME women HAVE to have late abortions.
there is also, for eg, turners syndrome, which affects female babies only; in severe cases, this causes severe physical and mental disabilities and damage, so much so that many die in the womb, others die soon after birth, sometimes causing complications for the mothers health.
for those who do survive, girls with this syndrome are short, do not sexually develop and suffer severe abnormalities.

so who thinks women who suffer that ordeal should be sterilised now? how ignorant that answerer is.

and what about 12 year old girls raped by either strangers or their own fathers etc? you think their tender bodies should be forced to give birth when they are still children themselves?

YES there should be a lower limit for those who want abortions for non-emergencies etc, but where do we draw the line?
no doctor will agree to a late termination just because the mother fancies one for goodness sake!!!

people need to stop being brainwashed by the media and fundamentalist pro-lifers.
i am pro life.
but there are many valid reasons for safe abortions.

the ignorance and prejudice shown to women must stop, we are not in the 'dark ages'.

and my heart goes out to all those women who have had to suffer the trauma and heartbreak of an abortion.

lets hope the rest of society catches up with their own humanity and humility

I watched it too, I am 16 weeks pregnant and my partner has left because of this and wants me to have a abortion, I did think about having a abortion but after watching that , their is no way, I did ask my partner to watch it so I am hoping he did, but I have taped it anyway! I do believe women should have the choice and would never judge some one even after watching that but I do think the law should be dropped down to around 16 weeks, I am glad they showed that program, people need to be shocked and realise the full impact of their choices but like you I do feel them choice should still be there.

My position is this. If you are against abortion, then don't ever have one even if you are raped, the baby will be retarded, or your life will be in jeopardy. But it is not your business what other people do. Are you personally willing to raise all of the unwanted children that would be born if there were no abortions? In China abortion is allowed all the way up to delivery. I'm not saying I agree, but it is a fact.

I believe it should only happen in a dire emergency but agree they are still going to be performed somewhere. Yes late term abortions are horrific and I think some states here have a limit that is a lot sooner than that.

I dont agree with abortions but I wont hold it against someone for doing so. Especially a woman who has been raped. I can't agree more that it should be 12weeks or less. At 24 weeks your child is pretty much fully developed except for the nervous system, etc. I can't believe someone would do that especially that far into the pregnancy!!

I think that after 8 weeks it should not be allowed. In the US it can't be performed if your more then 14 weeks but even that is to much b/c the baby has formed already. It is disgusting to watch and I couldn't watch it and would never want to go through it. I have 2 beautiful kids!!!
