San Jose is a pretty cool place to live. I've lived there for almost 30 years. There isn't a whole lot of crime, at least not anymore than a city this size. I believe San Jose was found to be one of the safest cities to live in. San Jose is also culturally diverse. It's quite the melting pot. Which is such an awesome thing because you can find a large variety of places to eat...everything from mexican, italian, vietnamese, japanese, chinese, indian, thai, cambodian, cuban, ethiopian and the list goes on and on. In regards to the night life, downtown San Jose is a good place to start.. you can also visit the surrounding cities which are 20-30 minutes away (Mountain View's Castro Street, Palo Alto, Los Gatos, etc..) The beach is about 30 minutes drive when there's no traffic. You want to talk about shopping? You have your choice of 4 malls all within 20 minutes driving. There are outlet stores in Gilroy..20 minutes from South San Jose. Or you can get your shopping fix up in San Francisco. You may hate the traffic. If you do make the move, make sure you do your research on where to live in San Jose, esp. if you're a single female. Some parts of East San Jose can be a little scary. But overall, it's a great place to live. I wish I was still living there..just recently moved to Vegas.
Good luck with the move!

I live in San Jose and I love it!
I've lived in Midtown San Jose and now I live downtown.
It's not boring there's plenty of clubs, restaurants and bars. You get the Northern California vibe with out all the crowds. I like San Jose and the South Bay (surrounding area) more than San Francisco. The roads are paved better, this is the safest metro area in the country.
San Jose is a VERY clean city and it always looks like someone is picking up the trash behind you (I don't litter for that fact).
When it comes to restaurants we have ANYTHING and EVERYTHING you can think of and it's done great. We dont have the crime and homeless people that San Francisco have, there's plenty of tech jobs. It isnt as cold, foggy or rainy as San Francisco. There is less traffic and did I mention less crowds? Santa Cruz is also only 30 minutes away.
San Jose is great. People that were born here dont know how good they have it. They are spoiled rotten. I'm proud of San Jose and proud to live here. I'm going on my 2nd year as a San Jose resident.

Living in San Jose is very expensive when compared to most other states. Be prepared to pay more for: rent, gasoline, food, electricity, etc. People will tell you that the higher wages compensate for the higher cost of living, but that is not true (unless you make $60,000+). Take a look at Craigslist.org for an idea of rental prices.
San Jose has a lot to offer. Visit, spend a couple of weeks, check things out and then decide if San Jose is where you really want to move to.
Best of luck to you.

I think its a great place for work, socializing and schooling.
It's one of the safest cities nationwide and its quite big. I haven't had any major trouble in my neighborhood.
Close to the bay (SF) for the nightlife and downtown San Jose has a good amount to enjoy the nightlife also for 21 and older.
For shopping, if you like retail and name brands like Gucci, LV, etc., there's Valley Fair and Santana Row which is right next to it. Santana Row is where a lot of high class go to enjoy their money and where you also see the nice rides(individually priced $60,000 and higher). There's also Great mall, Eastridge mall and Oakridge mall.
Weather is simple, summer is hot and winter has rain and its cold. Overall I lived my teenage years and still reside here. Hope you make a good decision and find a great place if you were to move here.
