calling the police for 50 minutes?

kate raised the alarm at 10pm. The police were called at 10.50pm by the Complex manager. He was aware immediately at around 10pm that the police were needed. Why didn't he call them?

Not really Delly. Kate and Gerry were in blind panic and the Manager assured them he had called the police.

Why did he lie?

Also Delly, when you are in a foreign country , in a hotel, it would be the managers responsibility to call the local authority to you really. Do you think the Portuguese police would have understood and hysterical british woman in blind panic?

Panicking Kamran. Running through the building calling for their child. Stopping cars going by and crying to people "we have lost our little girl, have you seen her" that's what they were doing.

WHY did the manager say he had called them but hadn't?

Shouldn't you be asking why the parents delayed calling the police for 50 minutes?

EDIT - Sorry, this has nothing to do with the Ocean Club Manager, at least he DID call the police. Your daughter is missing - first thing you do is get out your mobile.

From what has already been reported the Manager did an excellent job initiating the Missing Child Alert and recalling all off duty staff and organising a search.

You'll be saying it's Mark Warner's fault next that Madeleine was 'taken'.

Were you actually there? How do you know that the Manager said he'd called them but was telling lies?

Its known that somebody offered kate to call the police and she said she had already called them.

About Portuguese language: I would have run with my cellphone to look for someone to translate, and I'm sure there were a lot of people around (from the staff) that could speak both languages and could have translated if Kate or Gerry would have ASKED!

This was at night I know how this places work, they dont have a manager 24 hrs a day, at night they have a person that acts as a manager if needed but they don´t have the power or training of the real manager. I guess the staff called the manager and told him and he probably came from home to deal with the situation.

You'd think that the best thing to do would be to call the police himself first, irrespective of what else was happening. Presumably the could have stood down if it was found that they weren't needed.

Actually, I think many holiday places are very lax on this sort of thing. I read recently about a hotel where you didn't have direct dial emergency services in the rooms. It was a hotel that specialised in accommodating people with disabilities. When someone collapsed the husband had ring reception and ask them to do it. Unfortunately, the receptionist didn't comprehend the urgency, or give the right information to the ambulance service, delaying things even further. We don't want to think about these sorts of things when we're supposed to be enjoying ourselves, and I can imagine that if you were to ask what to do in an emergency people would think you were peculiar.

Good question, totally agree. The Mediterranean way seems very laid back and relaxed generally, it takes a lot to get them flustered, just ask the police over there!
Everyone saying 'why did the parents not call', well put yourself in their shoes, you would be running round in a blind panic looking for your child whilst the hotel reception/manager who speaks PORTUGUESE rang the police surely!
I really hope this never happens to any of the 'anti' brigade, you cannot possibly comprehend the situation and definitely have no idea how you would react or what you would do. Hindsight's a wonderful thing hey?

We dont know the facts here bit Id say that if the manager said he would call the police then kate and gerry would obviously have expected him to do so.
If the manager did not call the police then thats a question for him.I know that a lot of these places dont like police in the vicinity,so I dont think theres anything suspicious.

You are taking rubbish, The management called the police because the McCanns refused. The old lady upstairs asked, do you want me to call the police and Kate said no!

The McCanns and their lying pals where for this simple reason, they were to busy trashing the apartment and destroying any evidence that could incriminate them. They were also to busy calling Sky and all other media to cover their story!

Because she may have just wandered out of the unlocked apartment so they all decided to do a full sweep of the area.....no doubt the parents realised straight away how it would look calling the police out and then her turning up paddling in the pool or something. Dreadful parenting

The manager probably didn't take it seriously at first and thought that her parents were hysterical and over reacting. This is why there should be an Amber Alert system in place so there is a standard procedure for dealing with missing kids and it isn't up to any individual to decide what to do.

EDIT - Do any of you know how to say 'my child is missing' in Portuguese? Would you understand what was being said to you in Portuguese? Would you be able to describe your child in Portuguese? I know I wouldn't be capable of speaking to the police by phone in a non-English speaking country!!

Why did he delay it? Hmmm good point. Perhaps he does know a bit more than he is letting on. Did he spot Maddy as prey and then give the nod to someone, and helped them escape? He would have been in a great position to pick Madeleine out for traffickers , for the right fee. Hardly top dollar hotel work is it... and portugal is notorious for a massive Paedophile problems, isn't it.
