I have used them in a closed in shop with no problems. Just leave a small door or window open so the fumes can escape. Those heaters are the greatest!!! We used Kerosene in ours as well. There were not many fumes or vapors from it. I would not run a large one in a small area though.

when i was young my parents had a kerosine heater for our second floor, where the bedrooms were. as far as i know, kerosine burns clean, thus not giving off harmful fumes, and is ideal for use in a garage.

No. Anything that burns and gives off carbon monoxide can kill you.
