OK. I know they have a cell that senses sunlight which causes them to sleep. So does that mean when they get close to the light during the night they fall asleep at night too? It's like an alcoholic searching for liquor in a church and then falling asleep in front of a bar.

Its the same idea that we don't get sunburns from our bedroom lights and unless you get specific "grow lamps", your plants will die without sunlight. The sun emits a lot more than just white light that allows us to see. It emits rays and radiation that aid in photosynthesis and also have special reactions in bugs. So, don't think of it as the bugs "seeing" the light and falling asleep. Think of it more as the cells in their bodies sensing the emisions and rays from the sun, which they do not get from flood lights and car headlights, etc.

I read somewhere once that when bugs go near the light, they actually look for the darkest spot which is behind the light. That is why they sleep at day and go near the light during nighttime. They don't actually like the light.

I always wondered why moths dont try to fly towards the moon at night since they fly at lights. And to the above person bugs are brilliant, they control the ecosystem and feed sooooo many creatures directly or indirectly. Without them you wouldnt exist.
