right click my computer > properties> advance > settings (under performance) >advanced >change

button the custom size and enter what you like, I think the recommended was add1.5x of your actual RAM say like if you have 1GB, you set it to 2.5GB (1 + 1.5)

or you can button in system managed size and let windows do it.

If you don't know what you're doing your system can become unstable!!

You can by increasing the swap file.

Quoted form another Y!A answer:
"Well the good news for you is this little trick doesnt require any extra money on your part. To start off, go down to the lower left hand corner of your computer and click on the Start Menu. On the right hand of the start menu you should be able to go up to the My Computer icon, right click on it and go down to where it says Properties. You should get an informational screen with a bunch of tabs. Click on the tab that says Advanced. Where it says Performance, click on the Settings button. Click on the Advanced Tab again. Now you should see a page that has your Virtual Memory, click on the Change button. Here you can edit how much virtual memory you want. I generally recommend setting this to no more than 2 times the amount of actual memory you have. So if you have for example 512 Megs of RAM, you would put in 1024 which equals 1 Gig of Virtual Memory. Oh, by the way, this is instructions for Windows XP, but 2000 should be very similar. Hope this has helped."

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com

It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

If you have two hard drives (actual physical drives NOT just partitions) Win2K recommends you put the swap file onto the hard disc that does not contain your OS and progs. Makes sense: the heads can onlyread/write so much info per second to any one drive so spread the load. Remember to set the paging/virtual memory on your C drive to zero.
