AFAIK, the principle of ID is that the variety of life is too complex for it to have arisen "randomly", therefore it must have received the input of some (supernatural) designer.

The mechanism is entirely unknown and - since it involves the influence of a supernatural being, it cannot be derived scientifically.

ID wildly claims that evoloution is wrong and that the world was created or at least pre-planned by a higher being. Christian creationism (genesis etc) is an example of such theory. Of course the question that really screws it up is "what created the higher being?"
