With the popularity of pop country and rap/hip hop it seems far to say rock is dead. Yeah, I know that metal stuff like Slipknot is out there, but to me it really doesn't count because it's more or less loud noise.
But would you agree that hard rock is dead?

Rock music it's not dead, it is just evolving. Music (of any kind) always seems to reflect the youth of the age in which the music was created...thus...you say the same thing about Slipknot as your parents parents may have about alice cooper and such. It will never end, but never stop changing.
If you're still looking for "old school" rock, ac/dc still tours, rush put out a new album, and the scorpions new album is due."
I don't agree. That's always the easy thing to claim. I like all kinds of music that my dad and brother liked. Both my dad and I consider Chuck Berry to be the true rock n roll king.
So I dissagree with what you're saying. That's just the easy answer to give. There is a reason not many people like rock music now. It's poor quaility.

Country has had more fans worldwide than rock for some time. It's not even a close race in that respect.
Your definition of "dead" seems silly. What concern is it of mine what the radio audience chooses to listen to? It's taken some time, but musical culture has finally splintered irreversibly, and for the better. We are moving past the era of musical sensations and headlong into the era of artists. Terrestrial radio is obsolete. Everyone with any sense hates it and has either made the jump to satellite or else given up radio altogether. Large record labels are obsolete, but they don't intend to go out without a fight. I have in excess of 25 CDs from this year alone and at least as many still on my get-list. It's certainly not a bad time for people who are paying attention, and not just expecting their music to be spoon-fed.

Rock/Metal will always be very much alive. Just because it is not in the mainstream public eye all of the time does not mean that it is not still the biggest music in the world (which it is by the way). You just have to dig deeper which is usually more rewarding. The annoying Hip/Hop thing at the moment is a passing phase and is casual music. It will fizzle out just like disco did, just like techno did, just like the boy band thing did but Rock and Metal are ALWAYS there. They never go away they just morph and evolve. Rock is not casual music and Rock fans are not casual fans of music. They are the freakishly devoted ones who buy every album by their favorite bands and read every liner note and debate the songs with friends. How many people do you see talking with their friends or on line about the meaning of a Black Eye Peas song or a Beyonce song?? Not very many but the Rock fans are constantly out there celebrating and enjoying the music that enhances their lives. Rock is very healthy and very much alive because it has gone back underground where it belongs!
To quote the brilliant Rob Zombie in the brilliant documentary "Metal:A Head Banger's Journey":
"That is the thing about metal that I love, it is that it is so f*cking huge and yet some people.....don't even know it exsists"

Rock has always been alive. No one invented it. It was around before Elvis, Chuck Berry... all the way back to Adam. There are times in life when you sing a pretty happy song and there are times when you RAWK! People have been doing that for thousands of years.

You'd think so, it seems that hip hop or rap (same thing, who cares) is taking over. Gone are the days of rock stars, long hair, tight pants. But look on the bright side. Rap is just a phase that'll burn itself out (like disco). Just because Mtv is playing horrible music, (or horrible TV shows about rich people who are full of themselves) doesn't mean we have to watch it

It's better here under the underground.
Here we won't get bothered by dumb dummys.
We all live on a yellow submarine.
The key word there is live...
as in Live rock music.....
Come to Bonnaroo with us.
It's always 4:20 here!
peace and love and other weird things to ya man.

No. Hip-hop is just another stupid fad like Motown. Rock transcends the time and will keep doing so. The Red Hot Chili Peppers are probably keepin rock alive internationally now but I see a revival coming shortly.

i don't think it will at least for another thousand years, lol.
because people who like rock just can't easily turn to pop / hip hop the comparison is just too far away.
especially people who say "rap sucks" will never listen to rap and people who say "rock is sh*t" will never listen to rock.
dont worry there are still many good rock bands out there who could swallow some pop songs whole

Nope. It's alive. Just that w/ lots of the crap the public is getting fed, the good stuff is being made under the radar by indie bands.
There's lots of exciting new stuff going on out there. Trust me. Just don't rely on radio to play it. Turn to the 'Net & word of mouth....
