I sympathise with her painful awareness of a prejudice that must bewilder her. I want to tell her, for a start, that many of us have left our children in situations which (with hindsight) could have been disastrous, and it's only the grace of God which saved us from what was surely a one-in-a-million tragedy.
I want to say that countless people (especially those of us who have thought our children near to death) admire that desperate, necessary self-control.
And as someone whose maternal qualities were once called into question because I worked in newspapers, liked a glass of wine and teetered about in high heels wearing lots of slap, I want to reassure her that in the end, only you can truly know what kind of mother you are.

Claire-I asked a question (what is your opinion about this article?) and you replied with two frivolous questions.

I thought she was guilty, before I knew anything about her, or seen her.

I'm not in any danger of being middle class, or high achiever, and have a fairly ample bosom and been know to make my share of cookies and home made sweets, so cannot answer this question directly. That said I'm pretty certain that she would get even less sympathy if she were fat and frumpy with bad teeth.

There's no question that people ARE judged not only by their appearance but also by their deportment. Solicitors and barristers make judgements every day on how someone will 'come across' in court based on such issues. As you say, only the idividual can know themselves

Do you really think that every other English, middle class, high achieving mother is going to agree with you? I don't think so - you are basically condoning child neglect as long as the mother has a full time job!

My views on Kate McCann have nothing to do with the way she looks and all to do with the fact that Kate and Gerry McCann felt that having children shouldn't stand in the way of nights out. Would you be so keen to jump to the defence of someone from a council estate who decided she wanted a night off??? No, I didn't think so.

We all know what type of mother she is from the fact she would leave three children alone at night in a place they didn't know very well. It wasn't just once it was a continual habit throughout the holiday.

Edit: And no I am not jealous of Kate McCann's looks, she isnt that naturally pretty - instead of taking time to actually get off her bum and look for her daughter she spends it getting her roots down - I am vain about my looks, I hate having roots and not looking my best, but if it was my daughter missing I wouldn't care how anyone in the world saw me, I would be looking for my daughter not making an appointment to get my hair done, or chalking up jogging times

I think you need to realise that the anger people feel towards Kate has nothing to do with her looks. More to do with the fact that as a mother she could go jogging so soon after her
child's disappearance and that her ea rings were always on
and the make up carefully applied. They might not have killed Madeleine but they are responsible by their neglect for her abduction/death.
If all middle class women do the same as the McCann's perhaps they should think about not having children. Enjoy their jobs and lifestyles. A child is a commitment and a sacrifice. You cannot have it all!!!!!

in case you're analyzing the King James version of the Bible as literature, it relatively is a valid difficulty for an English classification. The KJV had a extensive effect on the form of the English language. the comparable isn't the case for the holy e book of the different faith.

Who cares what she blimmin looks like! She can have two heads for all I care! But no, I don't sympathise with a woman stupid enough to leave her babies unattended to go out for a drink (or several). People who think its ok to take chances with childrens safety and well being should not be parents.

Never for one millionth of a millisecond would I consider leaving any of my children alone at night in an unlocked apartment in a strange country ... or even in a locked apartment at home. NEVER. My sympathy with Kate McCann extends only to the probability that she is torturing herself every minute of every day with the knowledge that her (and her husband's - let's not forget Maddie had two parents) selfishness and negligence caused the death of her child.

What kind of mother is she? She is (almost certainly) the mother of a dead child. That ought to be enough to make any parent empathise just a little, even if the dominant emotion of all responsible parents is rightful disgust at her and her husband's behaviour.

I love what you've written...but the link shows me that yet again, Kate is only thinking of herself.

The last thing on my mind if my child was missing would be myself. My child would consume my every waking moment. Stuff what people thought about me, I'd be thinking of my child.

oh dear you really are very silly to suggest all middle class women relate to a woman who left her children alone to go party or whatever.
they could have had a sitter or stayed in but no they went out.
so what your saying is all middle class mothers are,
foolish enough to think leaving small children on their own is ok (yet if they were working class you would the first to condone them i suspect)
put their lifestyles and friends before their children.
i have never left my child in any situation that could have been disastrous if you have then your neglectful simple as that.
I think everybody knows what kind of mother she is and that is a neglectful one whether she is guilty of anything else remains to be seen. but every single woman i have spoken to has never related to her for leaving her children alone a good mother or father should never ever leave her children.

I think the only English who consider themselves middle class and identify with ANY of the McCann tribe are the ones with Chav antecedents or worked as advertising reps and think they've "made it"!

As you say, there but for the grace of God. Yes people do take chances, or should we call it a calculated risk, either way if something goes horribly wrong it is child neglect. They have failed to protect their child. They would not have left their passports or money in an unlocked apartment and I doubt that when you left yours it was in circumstances like these.
So tell me what's a Middle-class high achieving person like you doing down here? LOL
