The comic book hero Captain America was recently Assasinated in a storyline that touches on terrorism, which given the current climate is fair enough. The Character has now been redesigned but now he carrys a 9mm pistol of the forties. The artist Alex Ross claims that this is a nostalgic refrence to the time when the character was at the height of his popularity. Personally I have always taught my son that super heros do not kill obvisiously this flys in the face of everything I have taught my son and given the recent spate of shootings in American schools and children shot on the streets of Britain is it really a good idea to be promoting gun culture?

How is James Bond a morale boost to service men and women? The books were not published until the fifties long after the second world war, and are based on the cold war. Bond as a character is as cold and emotionless as the weapons he uses this is the point he is a killer. Captain America is all about rallying the troops, not to give in no matter the odds. His weapons should be his words. Does the football coach need a gun to boost the morale of his team!

Absolutely. There is an adatage about not taking a knife to a gunfight. In the world of comicbooks with Supervillians that have super powers that make his 9mm look like a cap gun.
Also, if it's the same gun from the 1940's the Government Issue was a 1911 A-1 .45.
Besides a gun is nothing more than a tool. It is no better nor no worse than the person that wields it.
Another thing, Hoppy, Lone Ranger, Roy Rogers all carried, all shot the BG's in the hand.
I guess if you don't like it don't buy the comics

I dont see any reason why not, Captain america was created as a morale boost for the americans during world war II, if there is anythime to carry a gun its during a world war.
A side note, the British version of the morale boost carrys a gun and kills very often, his name is James Bond.

I'm afraid that superheroes DO kill, you need to teach children the truth about life, (and fiction) you can't cover them in cotton wool forever.
Regardless of a child age, they should be taught about death and start to understand it be it from a tv programme or a small pet dying.
The background to many superheroes is of course comics and almost all of them have killed at sometime, the odd one unintentionally but most were out to kill the baddie.
As for the pistol? I don't think that's going to be much help when someone throws a bolt of lightning in his direction, maybe he needs an AK47 at least

This question is far too complex to answer here. A more appropriate one might be:
Why is it that when some baddie shoots at Superman, the bullets just ricochet off him. And yet when some baddie throws the gun at him, he ducks?
Now there's a question!
