San Francisco is typical in price to any other tourist city. However, if you shop around, you can find some bargains.
There are cheaper hotels near the airport, but that is south of the city center, you would need a car. Vaness Ave and Lombard Street have some that are reasonably priced, especially Sun. thru Thurs. Some hotels offer continental breakfast, free coffee. Some have a small refrigerator so you could get some wonderful goodies at Molinari's deli on Columbus Ave and take a picnic to Golden Gate Park or The Marina.
Enjoy

It depends on what you do, and if you are staying overnight, or just for a day.
Hotels in San Francisco are generally extremely expensive. Around 200 or more per night. That will most likely be the biggest expense of a San Franciscan vacation, if it is necessary.
A day trip to San Francisco can be relatively inexpensive. I recently went to San Francisco with my friend, had a fun-filled day, including a bay boat tour ($10) for around $80 per person. This included the cost of food, transportation around the city, and even souvenier shopping.

If you go to touristy places like Fisherman's Wharf then yes, it will be pretty overpriced. But I must say, it's definitely worth it! && The prices aren't even that bad.
Look for bargain prices on hotels tho, i hear those prices can be pretty high...
ENJOY YOUR STAY IN THE BAY!
