Well, snowboarding season is coming up and I need a new board. I'm mainly a jibber, so I know what style I want, but I can decide the flex. Here in PA you never snow what kind of snow you will get. You could get powder, icy, slush, so I don't know what flex / stiff to get. Any suggestions?

I always thought that a softer board was only for beginners and once you got better you would ride "beyond" your softer board. After about 5 years of riding, I was very comfortable on my softer board and bought a stiffer board - the kind with ridges molded into the top sheet for end-to-end stiffness. It was also torsionally stiffer.

On the right conditions (we also get ice and sun melt / hard pack) this stiffer board is really good - the tip and tail hold better in carved turns and it really bites the ice with minimal chatter. But in normal powder / crud conditions, this board is more work to keep it going in the right direction and it is only better for going really fast.

Now that I have both kinds of boards, if I could choose only one it would be on the softer side which makes snowboarding more fun on the runs and in the park and works in more of the varying conditions we get.

I would probably go out and get the most comfortable snowboard I could find and then follow my link to turn it into one for all occasions..
