The reason why we can decide our own destiny is that we are not alone on earth. If you lived alone, you could decide what you will be next year. We all have plans for our lifes. The problem is that they coincide with other people's plans for their lifes and sometimes our lifes, theyby we are constantly changing what we wanted to do, everytime they is a that collison of plans to ensure a harmonious relationship amongst humans.
For example;
When you finished school you wanted to work for a big multinational company, you apply and you get called for an interview. The problem is that your interviewer prepares questions that you don't know and therefore have not prepared for. You fail the interview, but life does not stop there, you continue and change your short term goal to look for another job else where.

So, the old 'free will versus determinism ' question again...We have to make choices in life without knowing what the consequences will be, and sometimes events happen which we don't choose but must survive. There is no destiny, no pre-determination, no guarantees, only choices. The basketball player ends up poor because that's the way we choose to structure society, not because of destiny.

Our destiny depends of the life we choose to lead, the path to take, but it is not only up to us as an individual because there are many influences and we can't read into the future.

No matter how much life experience and wisdom we have gained, we never come to the point where we have life worked out. It is too much of a mystery for us to understand its complexity. Even when we are trying to be in control and to determine our course in life, we have to admit that life remains the great unknown to us. Someone greater and all knowing has the final say of our future and this is the mystery of life!!
