Interesting idea. However, you should consider a few facts and questions before proceeding with any serious investigation.
1.) The carbon in magnetic tapes isn't what's responsible for the recording.
2.) Carbon is a very common element. If carbon = recording, then everything with carbon would be a recording, right?
3.) If carbon = recording, what is the playback mechanism responsible for the ghosts some people claim to see, and what causes the playback to occur in a place where the carbon isn't?
4.) A premise of your hypothesis is that ghosts exist. What are you basing this premise on? Before you explain what causes something you need to establish that something exists to begin with.
Like I said, this is an interesting idea. You show a higher level of thinking here. I encourage you to continue your inquisitive line of thought.

I wouldn't go as far as to call it a theory, or even a hypothesis. I'm sorry, but it's a strange idea. So are you saying that we are the recording medium, since we contain carbon? How can it result in ghosts if the recording medium goes away (decays)? How would the body as a recording medium project the "ghost information" away from the body?
Yes, magnetic tapes contain carbon (they coat the metal particles), but so do many other things that do not have the capacity to record anything. It's not the presence of carbon in the tape but the metal particles which provide for the magnetism. The carbon is just there to provide a layer or coating over the metal particles. Needless to say, our carbon atoms in our bodies aren't formed in any such highly specific way nor do we consist of metal particles.
So nice try, and keep using your imagination :)

Wow... Kudos for thinking "outside the box" my friend. You and Fox Mulder would have lots to talk about.
I just don't think it's possible. I agree with what others have said in regards to the composition and make of VHS tapes. Now, the "old-school" Beta, now you're talkin'... j/k.
The other problem I see with this, is that the medium of "play back" would have to be present at many different times. So, in theory someone's energy would have to be present and be in the same space and time as your recording. Clear as mud, right?

There are pubs in Ir land that have been recorded at having sounds and laughter mysteriously sound after every one has left the Establishment however was found that the walls have the same quality's that are in a audio record. But we do have the tech to record brain patterns and the like. It is possible and probable that every thing that we do in life is recorded to the exact detail. The more Hannis activity the stronger the imprint. We all have our every moment watched and monitored. If you don't believe it that is OK. They all ready know.

The Akashic Records are the records of everything that has ever been. These are imprinted in an etheric space/dimension. A few people (like Edgar Cayce) can access them. Everything you have ever done, even in your most private moments is being recorded there, like a movie. Nothing is left out. You will get to go back over this record and review your life after you die.

Ask any planetary scientist... they'll say, "Follow the carbon." YES, carbon is a recording device. It comprises everything we know about LIFE. It is our display of this planet having life and all of our history as such. Even on a cosmic scale, as we will discover, carbon will be the tell-tail signs that life is abundant and wildly adaptive. But, alas, I doubt ghosts have much to do with carbon dating and analysis. Interesting thoughts.

No. Your theory is a big steaming pile of dingoes kidneys. Only the tape plastic is carbon based. The active coating on magnetic tape is iron or chrome based.

Wow good thinking, I don't where you guys keep coming up with this stuff! We have a lot of iron in our blood so it could be your on to something. How you going to test this theory, stretch someone out real long and thin and run them through a tape recorder maybe!
