I believe that some of the chimps the Bonabos {?} may do it that way as well, so it's maybe not a recent as you may think...

At least as far back as the Roman Empire--the archaeological excavations at Pompeii unearthed (no pun intended) some, shall we say, rather explicit paintings of a number of "exotic" services offered by the ladies of pleasure in various business establishments.
Personally, I think it goes back a lot further than that!

My friend was kidding around with her grandmother and asked the grand about french kissing and the women didn't know what it was. My friend told her and she said that she never did that. We believe she was telling the truth and I have heard other similiar stories, so not everyone figured it out.
