I dont know The west have such a practice to honor East by calling as u mentioned. East always consider it as a pride tocall themselves as The Margeret Thacher of India( Indira Gandhi) or indian Bismark (Patel)

however Martin Luther King really deserve that title!!

it was martin luther jr. as he belived strongly in mahatma gandhis priciples of satyagraha and ahimsa ( non - violence)

like gandhi ji he also launched various peacefull civil disobedience movements against ratial discrimination like

The civil rights movement ( 1954 - 1968)
