Octopus winding is primarily a way of locomotion via their arms (octopus also speed movement by jet propulsion). Each of the octopus’s arms have two rows of suction cups each of which has ‘taste sensors’ to allow it to identify food. This allows the octopus to use their suckers to sense any food they come into contact with while winding. Winding could also be a way to keep them from being predated.
