Dig it up and if you have the space lay the turf in a pile, grass side down, and let it compost. lay a membrane over the bare soil and cover in slate chippings or stone. Get these from a stone merchant who will deliver them. You may have to barrow them to the garden but it will work out cheaper than those bought in bags at a garden centre. You may wish to consider a pebble pool as it is always nice to have the sound of running water when sitting out on a nice summer's day (we do get the odd one now and then). When planting, go for drought resistant plants. If you don't have a snail problem Hostas are very easy and will grow, die back and come again all by themselves. A nice seating area always looks a treat and cast aluminium patio furniture is quite trouble free. Good luck and happy gardening.

You can rent a sod cutter [if you want to save the grass that you have] and remove the grass that way and plant it elsewhere. Or you can spray the areas that you don't want with Roundup. I wouldn't suggest laying down any weed barriers because they really don't work, and my landscaping husband says the same. Put down mulch in it's place or try some pea gravel if you want a maintenance free zone or plant a raised flowerbed in it's place.

just lay thick newspaper sheets on top of the grass and cover it with 20cms of sugarcane mulch or plastic. the grass will die in four to five months. then just spread some compost and plant shrubs. they will flower for you and help the local birds by giving them somehwere to live. use the ones that are native to your local area, that way u don't have to water them, they will live on local rainfall. your nursery will tell u what to plant.
other options could be to pave the area, put gravel on it, put some ground cover, make a pond, make a chook run for free range eggs, plant a tree as grass doesn't grow under the shade of a tree, make a vegie patch and eat organic, plant flowering perennials and the bees will thank you, put fruit trees and live longer, put synthetic turf on it, make a pergola or deck to have an entertaining area. I think the choices are endless.

when I had that kind of problem I just put vinegar in a spray bottle and sprayed the grass. Overnight all the grass where I sprayed was completely gone!! Then I just put gravel on top.

Spray it with Roundup.

Lay down 7-9 layers of news paper and mulch on top of that.

Rent or borrow a tiller, till it up and plant flowers.
