It's called the "funny bone" or humerus (ie: humorous) because if you hit it right, you'll get a funny tingling all the way up to your pinkie.
This is because the nerves that run through your arm pass through this one spot just on the outside of your elbow. Feel the elbow joint and there's a valley between the actual knobbly elbow bone and another ridge just outside of it (to the left hand side of it on your left elbow, right hand side of it on your right elbow). The nerves run within this valley and if you hit it right, you hit the nerves and get that tingly feeling.
Just don't bang it too hard cause, you guessed it, it might hurt.

The funny bone actually refers to the ulnar nerve which runs from the shoulder to the hand, at one part running near the ulna bone. It is the only exposed nerve in the human body (it is unprotected for a few centimeters at the elbow). That is why it hurts so dang much when you whack it. I once passed out from hitting my funny bone really hard on the corner of a table!!

the "funny bone" is not a bone. It is actually hitting the nerve that runs across the bone.
"When you bump the back of your elbow directly over the ulnar nerve, it's caught between what you hit and the bony groove. A painful electrical impulse is discharged from the nerve, which runs through the arm and into the little and ring fingers"
