I'd start shooting my bow and arrow at that Christopher Columbus.

I'm in the middle of reading a great book called '1491', its about the society in the Americas before the Europeans came along, if you have the time you should try to read it.
First of all, native Americans had boats, some, like the Incas, had boats the size of small European ships, and there was active trade routes throughout the Americas. So the concept of the Indians seeing a ship on the horizon and not knowing what a ship is or being scared is wrong.Compared to the Indians, the Europeans looked rather pail and sickly, and since Europeans hardly ever bathed, while Indians bathed regularly, the Indians usually did not like the foul oder of the whites. The Indians were usually quite open to the opportunity of trading goods with these ships, as long as the Europeans did not overstay their welcome. Of course their were times that a European ship would kidnap Indians and take them back to Europe, so in many areas the Indians stopped trusting and wecoming the Europeans.

In Columbus's case, upon arrival in the Carribean (San Salvador Island) he and his crew (in their surviving journals) described very happy peaceful people. Children with tame parrots. Excellent swimmers to come out and see the ship. The people he destroyed had no known enemies to speak of and would not necessarily have been at all suspicious of the ships -- even if they were a curious sight to behold. Columbus tortured, killed, raped, and maimed in an effort to get the islanders to bring him gold. His biggest prize upon return were slaves though and that was not good enough -- which is why he died in prison and was thought to be a failure in his time. Later on I'm sure people wish that those who saw the initial invasion of the "America's" (named after Columbus's navigator Amerigo Vespucci) would have been more violent or even frightened -- but the fact is they were not. They were overpowered and unskilled in warfare the way the Europeans were and they stood little chance at stopping their ambitions because of their peaceful nature and lack of destructive technology.

Huge boats with billowing sails, the likes of which few to no one had ever seen before. And the people on board would probably look pretty sickly, given how pale they were plus being beaten up by the ocean, and dressed in funky clothing.
I'd be thinking whatever a closest equivalent of "holy crap!" could have been. I mean, I imagine that kind of thing may as well have been aliens landing from another planet. : )

My issue is the perceived ideology that Christopher Columbus discovered America? I've always felt that it was the Native Americans that discovered Christopher Columbus~

Would it be the same feeling you'd get with First Contact with extra-terrestials? First instinct would be fear...., then using CAVE MAN logic, i'd relate the incident to god somehow. In modern times, the religious notions from the past 2,000 years would come tumbling down...

Even though I am native American, I must disqualify myself from this interesting question. For I am all to aware of the history since then, and would no doubt have a biased answer.

As i watched the large wooden vessel move through the water up to the shoreline. i thought to myself " what could come of this?", " is that a tribe i see inside the vessel?". i shall greet them and trade my goods with them to show that we are a good people.
the best thing to do is elaborate, and try to imagine
