From a salary standpoint, I think Peyton Manning has the highest paying contract but aside from Football salaries there have been several successful players outside of football that have made tons of $$$.

The NFL has signed some HUGE contracts since 2001, however the largest guaranteed contracts have been Peyton Manning ($99.2M with $34.5M guaranteed) and Michael Vick ($130M with $37M guaranteed). Donavan McNabb’s $115 million contract did not have as much guaranteed, even though it was overall a larger contract if the contract were allowed to run its course without restructuring his deal. Michael Vick’s recent problems have taken him out of the elite salary status. I think the key to answering your question though is which player has the best opportunity to earn money from endorsements outside the football arena thereby making him even richer. I would have to say Walter Payton and Ronnie Lott. Both of these players were leaders on and off the field, Quality people and set the bar for the rest of the NFL to compare itself too. Their stats were also among the best of all time and they were winners. But most of all they did not act like a spoiled brat like a certain WR in Dallas. Jerry Rice would have to be given strong consideration also.
