Around $1,000, any brand, 2GB of ram, at least 3 hours of battery life, Core 2 duo (don't get AMD Athlon), and at least 100 GB of hard drive space.
That "configuration" should fit your need

There are tons of configurations, and your choice primarily depends on the type of user you are. Regardless, a "standard" configuration would be:
1. CPU - Intel 2 Core Duo, Pentium 4, Pentium M, AMD
2. RAM - 512MB - 1GB (or more if you can afford it)
3. SCREEN - 15" - 17"
4. HARD DISK - 60GB - 100GB (or more if you can afford it)
5. CD MEDIA - CD-RW/DVD combo OR DVD-RW
6. Bluetooth availability (optional)
7. At least 3 USB ports
Hope this helps

The answer to your question completely depends on the amount of money willing to be spent.
My recommendtion: use www.newegg.com
At Newegg, you can search for notebooks, and narrow your search by different attributes of the product (price, processor, speed, ram, manufacturer, screen size, resolution.. the list goes on).
Another great thing about Newegg, is the fact that thousands of other people have already purchased most of the laptops available on the site, and they return to write reviews about the products, making you more confident in your purchase, and saving you lots of headaches down the road.
*When you click on an item, make sure to check out its detailed specifications, to see exactly what your getting. (i.e. warranties!).
The site is very user-friendly. I can attest to their professionalism, as well. I've ordered through them for 2 years; you will be impressed. They usually ship the same day or following, and shipping within the US takes about 3 days.
Good Luck on your purchase, if you have any questions or need help deciding which one will be the best buy for your money, feel free to email me anytime - I'll respond within 24 hours.
