The reaction between acids and metals :
When an acid reacts with metal, a salt and hydrogen are produced:
acid + metal -------------------> salt + hydrogen( gas )

Hydrogen- H2 :
Put a lighted splint into a sample of the gas. Burns with a "popping" sound

Hydrogen is highly soluble in many compounds composed of rare earth metals and transition metals and can be dissolved in both crystalline and amorphous metals.

Hydrogen gas is usually liberated as acid contains hydrogen.

Test the gas liberated with burning wooden splint. If it is hydrogen gas, you will hear a "pop" sound.

Acid(aq) + Metal(s)-------->Salt(aq) + Hydrogen(g)

Therefore, Hydrogen gas.

Use pop test by placing candle under test tube with gas.

However, reaction of metal with nitric acid would give nitric oxide gas instead of hydrogen.

the two dilute hcl and dilute h2so4 react explosively with energetic metals like potassium,sodium and calcium and reasonably with much less energetic metals like magnesium, zinc etc. producing metallic salts and HYDROGEN So hydrogen gas is released while an acid reacts with metals. e.g:Mg + 2HCl >MgCl2+H2^
