if you are trying to do this locally, with no industry help. you have a long road ahead of you
most plastic is recycled by being shredded. but it must first be separated by type, and there are 7-8 different types. the lists are all on web sites
after the plastic is shredded, it is superheated to make pellets. then it is sold to people who use those pellets to make various items, like plastic wood, and other non-food grade products. only "virgin" plastic can be used in food grade containers
there are several facilities on the gulf coast that do this, and i assume in other industrial areas as well
if you are just looking for ways to get the people of your community to get off their collective behinds and recycle instead of throwing everything in the trash, there are two factors you need to consider. convenience and cost
make it easy to recycle. some people are so lazy they will not even separate their trash if you give them the different bins and carry them to to curb
appeal to their sense of money. make it a fine to mix the garbage. charge a deposit on the plastic and other soda containers. when i was in Hawaii, every park, and almost every street corner had a wire basket for empty water bottles, and different civic groups took the bottles to the recycle places and received money.

There are a lot of different kinds of Plastics. This answer was taken from wikipedia.org.
When compared to glass or metallic materials, plastic poses some unique challenges from a recycling perspective. Chief among them is their low entropy of mixing, which is due to the high molecular weight of large polymer chains. Another way of stating this problem is that, since a macromolecule interacts with its environment along its entire length, its enthalpy of mixing is very, very large compared to that of a small organic molecule with a similar structure; thermal excitations are often not enough to drive such a huge molecule into solution on their own. Due to this uncommon influence of mixing enthalpy, polymers must often be of nearly identical composition in order to mix with one another. To take representative samples from beverage containers, the many aluminium-based alloys all melt into the same liquid phase, but the various copolymer blends of PET from different manufacturers do not dissolve into one another when heated. Instead, they tend to phase-separate, like oil and water. Phase boundaries weaken an item made from such a mixture considerably, meaning that most polymer blends are only useful in a few, very limited contexts.
Another barrier to recycling is the widespread use of dyes, fillers, and other additives in plastics. The polymer is generally too viscous to economically remove fillers, and would be damaged by many of the processes that could cheaply remove the added dyes. Additives are less widely used in beverage containers and plastic bags, allowing them to be recycled more frequently.
The use of biodegradable plastics is increasing. If some of these get mixed in the other plastics for recycling, the recycled plastic is less valuable.
Hope this helps.

tell your teacher that the only recycleable products that are cheaper, cleaner and cost efficient to recycle are aluminum and precious metals. paper is way worse on the environment to recycle and plastic has about the same effect on the surrounding air and water and costs more to recycle than to create from petro products.

The best way is to decrease the buying of products that use plastic.i.e water, soda. Unavoidable plastic products should be discarded according to the ordinances set by your city or township. You can also reuse plastic to transfer other products. i.e. chlorine to smaller plastic container, etc.
