The defense department is the biggest direct expenditure and therefore accounts for the largest amount of waste through inefficiency. We are still maintaining the capability to fight WWII at sea , but we have no opponent to fight it with, We are deploying a missile defense system that is unreliable, and maintaining a nuclear capability so large that it would be suicidal to use. But with all this money they do not have all the equipment we need for the war we are in.

I don't think it's a question of wasting money but more about spending it on stupid things. Things like deep cleaning hospitals because of this hospital bug (forgotten the name - sorry!) They take wrong approaches. Strategies like that will reduce the risk of infection by about 1 or 2% (because it's only really your feet that touch the flloor in hospitals.)

It needs to be allocated in different, more efficient ways - the use of alcoholic wipes while washing hands for example. Reducing in the amount of jewelry worn by nurses as it harbours bacteria.

The government really needs to work on probability theory and that will help them realise what they are wasting money on.

The government of the people by the people does not waste money. But, powerful elites, patronage and pork barreling plunder our money like parasites. It's a pig's trough.

The government should be run like a business. An agency that does not provide a positive net gain should be eliminated and the free loaders should be fired. ie. US Department of Education - each state does their own thing.
