both are great drummers. But i would have tip my cap to the professor Neil Peart.
Nothing against Portnoy because I enjoy listening to Dream Theater as well as Rush.
Neil has influenced countless drummers and I'm sure Portnoy is one of them. But just gotta go with the Professor Neil Peart

Wow... two amazing drummers, but Neil Peart owns all, even if his competition is Mike Portney.
I've always loved Rush more than Dream Theater, but in the last 2 weeks, DT's really catching up....

Don't know Mike Portnoy, forgive my ignorance. But I do know the greatness of Neil Peart. And you need to check out the books he has written, especially "Traveling Music". The man writes a nice book, not to be expected of a big-time rock star.

I asked this on another music board a few weeks back. The general consensus:

Neil

No one denied Mike was great, but some accused him of "wankery", as opposed to Neil who they thought was more tasteful.

Neil Peart. Although I personally think Alex Van Halen is no slouch as well.

Why does one have to be better than the other? Both are great drummers and the music they play is different. Can't we just appreciate BOTH of them without having to play the childish playground game "my drummer's better than your drummer!"?
