Not if it comes naturally to the person like eating, walking, breathing. But if you are giving and not getting the type of reward you want in return you can feel that way. And it depends on your meaning of compassion. sometimes it's best to let a person help themself.

Not as long as you realize your compassion is doing some good. It's when your compassion is not a part of real work to improve a situation that it can be frustrating and can lead to burnout.

i think it depends on how strong the individual in question is about their values and self awareness. as long as you cater to your own mind, body and soul's needs before you do anyone elses, compassion is a wonderful attribute to have. The world could definitely use more of those. Compassion doesnt always mean being sympathetic to those in need because those in need might be walking all over you and taking advantage of your soft and sincere spirit. So compassion should be measured with your heart and head.

This may be related to your deeply held beliefs. Many people think that offering compassion "takes something" out of them... as if they can only offer a certain amount of compassion before they shrival up.
Also, it can be tiring to be involved in other people's situations that require compassion if you forget to take care of your personal desires. Those people who make good social workers, psychologists, and counselors know how to leave their work at WORK.. and not take it home.
PS, I assume you mean that "burnout" is the inability to experience joyful productivity.

Compassion is a good thing that should keep your spirits high . So many people and not compassionate and they will need to ask for something and then they will hope they get it. Compassion begets compassion. It is a admirable trait.

thats one of the best questions ive read on yahoo...
I would say yes...
I belive that too much empathy weighs down a person.
There is a saying: "dont waste your pearls on swine"
Meaning, dont give away the best parts of you to people who dont diserve or appreciate it...
Its probably best to be a good person in general, but save the real compassion and empathy for your loved ones.
Even THAT can wear you out, make you bitter, etc...
But at least you know its the right hting to do in that case...
