If you read information and news about what type of fuel is best for a car, they all say use what the manufacturer recommends.

Well the manufacturer of my car claims that 87octane is fine for it, however when I use premium fuel, I get better gas mileage and no annoying knocking and pinging in the engine when I press on the accelerator.

You need to state the year/make/model of car.

In reality, there is no performance improvement if you use a high octane gas if your doesn't require it. all octane is is resistance to pinging. so the higher the octane, the less ping. all cars have whats called a knock sensor, when it detects a ping, it will either retard or advance timing via settings in the car computer. an engine ping will make the timing retard, or not combust faster than where the position of the piston is.
If you are having knocking & pinging sounds, you might want to have your timing checked out, because if high octane gas is helping you, it tells me there's something else wrong.

the higher the octane, the slower the burn in the combustion chamber, if you car can't utilize a high octane gas, you actually can begin to create carbon buildup on the top side of the engine because the fuel isn't burning as fast and after the valve is closed and the piston is heading down already, any fuel left over will stick to the cylinder wall/valves. it might get burned off, but probably won't.

This is heresy, but I've heard the hosts of CarTalk on NPR insist that buying premium fuel is a rip off.
