Just a note about what other people have said.

Take the first persons advice and don't go to Park City, it's overrated. Try, like someone said, Snowbird (Alta is skiing only and I don't know why anyone would recommend that in the snowboarding section) also Brighton is good.

For Lake Tahoe, Heavenly is good, but a little bit over hyped. For an amazing place checkout Kirkwood.

I don't know much about renting cabins, but I'm sure all of those places have cabins to rent. I would go to Utah or Lake Tahoe before I ever went to California.

My experience is that cabins are not cheap anywhere that the snowboarding is good. Personally I love living here in Alaska with the Chugach Mountains right outside my door. There is already snow on them and I am anticipating an epic season already.

Big Bear,CA comes up quite often for a destination to go snowboarding but I have not been there since I was a kid (twenty plus years ago). Park City Utah (home of the sundance film festival) has some great places to ski or snowboard, and Heavenly near Lake Tahoe is also supposed to be very nice. A few places slightly out of the area you were asking about are Mount Hood in Oregon, and Taos in New Mexico. I used to frequent Mount Hood when I was in Jr. High and High School. And I have friends in New Mexico that rave about Taos.

Avoid the hype and price of Park City, UT resorts. Any of the resorts up Little Cottonwood Canyon are good (Alta/Snowbird) You can find accomodations at the resorts or in Salt Lake.

Timberline Lodge at Mount Hood has a great snowboard area, although is is now being bombarded by storms now, when they clear, snowboarders will flock there.
