Let me help you people a bit by showing you their records -
* In test cricket -
# Number of matches:
(1)Border=156 (2)Gavaskar=125 (3)Miandad=124
#Total runs scored:
(1)Border=11,174 (2)Gavaskar=10,122 (3)Miandad=8832
#Batting average :
(1)Border=50.56 (2)Gavaskar=51.12 (3)Miandad=52.57
***Note: Average of Border is for 156 matches as compared to 125,124 of Gavaskar,Miandad. So don't under-estimate him in average department.
Also Gavaskar's average is for 10,000+runs as compared to 8,800+ of Miandad. So there is no clear winner in the overall average department
#Total centuries
(1)Border=27 (2)Gavaskar=34 (3)Miandad=23
***Note: Gavaskar clearly beats the other two in this department. He scored 34 in 125, while Border scored 27 in 156 & Miandad 23 in 124
******Note: There is one very important thing about Gavaskar that he scored 13 centuries against the deadly bowlers of West Indies thus making him the best player against West Indies in that golden era of Carribean crickt

#Totall runs scored-
(1)Border=6,524 (2)Gavaskar=3,092 (3)Miandad=7,381
****Note - Clearly, Miandad was the better as compared to Border. While Sunny should not be compared bcz he just played 100+matches
#Centuries -
Miandad beats Border with 8 compared to his 3.
Again ,no need to include Sunny in this competition bcz he played less than half matches played by these two.
*****Note :Miandad scored more 200's in test cricket.
*Border received 11 Man of the match awards compared to 5 of Gavaskar & Miandad.
*Highest score of Miandad in test cricket was 280, Gavaskar's 234 & Border's 248

Sunil Gavaskar is the World's top No.1 batsman of this World till date. The reason is Sunil Gavaskar used to open the Indian innings and face all the genuine fast bowlers backed by some excellent fielders. But Sunil Gavaskar used to have a very strong defensive technique and face all the bowlers & played superbly. Since Sunil Gavaskar's batting technique was copy book style he scored 10000+ runs - World's highest. Donald Bradman used to bat at one down or two down for the Australian team and so Donald Bradman would play when the shine of the ball was not there & it is comparitively easy to play at No.3 or No.4 position and hence takes No.2 position in World ranking. Sachin Tendulkar also did not consistently open the Indian innings and so Sachin Tendulkar will come No.3 in World's best. Similarly Allan Border or Javed Miandad would come further lower in World's best No.4 or 5 or 6 position.
It was a cricket treat for me to see in my television set Sunil Gavaskar's batting against the then genuine fastest bowlers Michel Holding, Joel Big Bird Garner, Malcom Marshall , Andy Roberts, etc.
Statistics alone cannot decide the batsmen as the greatest since if a batsman plays only one innings and scores 125 not out and retires will be higher in statistics than Donald Bradman. Can we conclude that the batsman who scored 125 not out is better than Donald Bradman.
I have seen bodyline bowling & the West Indian fast bowlers backed by excellent West Indian fielders. West Indies bowlers were much faster than the so called bodyline bowlers.
Sunil Gavaskar was a COPY BOOK of the CRICKET GAME & Donald Bradman was a hitter as that of a tennis player type player. DONALD BRADMAN did not have the technique as that of Sunil Gavaskar. Donald Bradman shots were mostly lofted shots technique, not cricket shots rather tennis game shots. This is my personal idea which is different from others/media/statistics. I have my own stand which cannot be changed. I am sure peoples also will learn my point of view, after understanding my point will change their stand also.
Note: Geof Boycott was a better batsman than Sunil Gavaskar but Boycott did not score 10000+ runs & hence I did not consider him as the best (No.1 ranking)

If it is test cricket, it is Sunil Gavaskar, who is the best. Alan Border cannot be the best, because he has always faced the weakest opposition. At least weaker than his own team. But, Gavaskar had shone despite the fact that he had to face best bowling attack in the world. Javed Miandad did not score much outside Pakistan and Sharjah. He should be grateful to his home umpires for elevating him to a position that he has reached. And Sharjah cricket is where a Pakistani bowler could score a hat trick with three lbws.

Though I am an Indian, but in my view, Border was miles better than Gavaskar or Miandad. Border came to global attention when Australian cricket was on on its knees. Even the burden of captaincy didnt break his back. Instead he with his batting took his team to the centerfold of world-domination. Gavaskar never played Marshall, Garner, Roberts, Holding, Croft, Ambrose or Walsh with such consistency as Border. Even Marshall & Hadlee, THE greatest bowlers of his era, rated him as the best batsman in the world. Plus outranking Greg Chapell as Australia s greatest batsman since THE DON is no ordinary feat.

I rate Gavaskar as the best as he has scored more cdenturies in less number of matches as comopared to
others. Further, if he had played 156 test matches, he coul,d have surpassed the total number of runs scored by Allan Border.

Gavaskar was sensational. Amazing short man against fast bowling. He was the backbone of his team when they struggled and he was an inspiration to a generation.
Border was sensational. Amazing short man against fast bowling. He was the backbone of his team when they struggled and he was an inspiration to a generation.
Javed was a stroppy little crap who could bat reasonably well.
EDIT: Mr Encyclopedia: Noticed the comment about Donald Bradman facing the old ball. Have you ever heard of bodyline? Ever read the statistics? - he had to face quite often in the first over or two. His average was nearly 100 amongst the most ferocious fast bowling of all time. So ferocious they banned it! Sorry, but on that one you are just wrong.
