It's an abbreviation. Miss and Ms stand for something else, and since Mrs stands for a married woman or the "mistress", they took "Mr" and added an S. Hence- the Mr and Mrs.

I think Mrs. is short for Mistress. Mister with a female ending. Watch old movies, they say, "The mistress of the house with be with you, shortly." Somehow, today, the word has come to mean a married man's girlfriend.
Edit: some people don't seem to know that Ms. is new, it came about in the 70s. It is to be used for married or unmarried women.

mrs is short for mistress - the keeper of the household. We have changed the pronunciation with time. Like we now say Ms to keep from specifying Miss or Mrs.

Mrs is the form that a woman gets after she is married, it is for Mistress like Mistress Angelo (they just abbreviated it to Mrs.) As on the other hand you have Ms. which is the unmarried from for miss. Like little miss muffet. Back in the old days a woman was refered to as a Mistress to her husband...

Actually, Mrs is the short form of the word 'Mistress'. Many hundreds of years ago, all adult women were referred to as 'Mistress', but this form of address fell out of use as the short forms, 'Mrs' and 'Miss' became more common.
The only reference I can find right now is in Wikipedia, but it's spot on, so I include it below.
Cheers :-)

It's a sign of marriage, since Marriage is a bond between two people (Often times, but not Always, Man and Woman) They combine Mr. with Ms. To get Mrs.
Why they say Misses? Because Mistress (Combined Mr. Ms.) Means a long time love partner who is not actually married to the male.

Mrs isn't short for Misses but for Mistress. This is how married women were originally addressed.

It's actually short for mistRess. People started using the word missus instead of mistress, but they kept the abbreviation.
