We were reading an article about it in my cicvics class, and some of the opinions that surfaced were:

-shouldn't have been done. the original founding fathers establlished the country as Christian and it should stay that way

-shouldn't have been done because now every religion in the United states will want a Congressional meeting to be started with a prayer from their religion

-it depends on how much of the population is of this religious orientation

These were just a few of around 20 opinions in my 8th grade civics class. The article we read also mentioned the Representative of Idaho, Bill Sali's opinion, which was that it should not have been done.

you make a good point steven, because the founding fathers did come over here because of religious oppresion. however, they were just seperating from the Church of England b/c they didnt like the way the church was being run. it was raised as a mostly Christian state, and while we may have many different religions in our country, i agree in the fact that we should use only the prayers of the religions that have a major impact, and not those wimpy religions such as Jediism (STAR WARS GEEKS!!!!), Wiccans, and other so called 'religions' in the United States

Ridiculous. Taking a slide down the slippery slope these stupid Democrats have provided when is it the turn for the:
1) Wiccans
2) Goths
3) Zoroastrians
4) Satanists
5) and etc...

And let's not forget the religion of no religion - the Atheists - they should be given a spot to make a statement (I guess that would be an opening prayer to them) about how there is no God or afterlife or Heaven (or equivalent) and that we're all fools for believing that there is...

Free Speech includes Prayer in the Bill of Rights. At least he didn't try to Ban Public Prayer, Christmas, Easter like the rest of the Politically Correct Intolerant bigots who want to Ban those who are religious or hold a religious conviction. Now, that is true Tolerance and observance of the First Amendment!

The founding fathers placed a clause in the constitution that prohibited the government from establishing a state religion. Our country was not founded as a christian nation, it was founded by christian people who wanted the freedom to worship as they chose. As our nation was established to allow freedom of religion, I believe all faiths should be welcomed into our house of government. There is room here for all religions and creeds who respect the rights of others to live and worship as they choose.

This issue is as much as a waste of time as a non-binding resolution.

The first amendment doesn't prohibit Congress from prayer on their own time. This opens a quagmire about making a determination of what faiths are 'legitimate' enough to be represented by this practice.

Why shouldn't Wiccans, Atheists, Scientologists be allowed to have this opportunity for thiis access?

My answer: Pray to whomever you want to yourself on your own time, and then do your bleepin' job!

Another example of the political correctness of the Democratic party.

Next election I will definitely be voting for the Republicans as the less of 2 evils.

I can tolerate the ignorance of belief in prayer and appreciate it's good focus but the level of legislature both in competence and corruption is intolerable.

THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE WHO CALL THEMSELVES CHRISTIANS YET THEY BELIEVE TOTALLY DIFFERENT EVEN LEAVING CHRIST ON THE SIDELINE. OR THE BENCH. THIS NATION SHOULD HONOR ALL THE FAITHS, INCLUDING THOSE WHO BELIEVE GOD IS A TREE. ITS THE QUALITY OF US THAT COUNTS .
