l's and r's are often difficult for those whose first language is Chinese.

Actually it's the r sound that's more difficult for Chinese. In Chinese, we don't have sounds that require you to twist your tongue that much as you are pronouncing the English r. I think your professor is overcorrecting himself when trying to pronounce an l. This problem might be his alone.

I think that is because, like in Japanese, Chinese has no L sounds in its language instead they what sounds like a high pitch r sound.

Either An Asain heritage or a speech defect. Either are quite common
