My sleeping patterns have been so erratic the last few years. We got a new mattress and I seem to be more comfortable now, but once in a while I wake up coughing (coughing hard by the time I realize I am even awake) and sometimes even throwing up a little bit , it reaching my throat. It seems as though the throwing up thing only happens when I eat later at night(but why?) but the coughing happens more frequently. Is it possible that I am coughing because of some serious sleeping disorder? My husband does say I sleep with my mouth open and sometimes it sounds like I am "choking on my tongue" Should I have this professionally checked or seeing as this only happens once in while, am I OK?

If it were me, I would go get evaluated by a doctor and ask for a sleep study. You sound like you might have sleep apnea or GERD's (acid reflux). Most larger hospitals have sleep clinics in them or associated with them. I would look one up and make an appointment. You will have to fill out a questionnaire and then go for a pretty extensive evaulation and then they will make an decision of a sleep study is called for. I know all this because I am going through the same thing.

I know what I'm talking about here!!
Acid Reflux! Raise the head of your bed 6 inches. We use bricks. The doc told me to do that and to take Prilosec. It is much, much better !!!! I also started using the nasal strips, you can get the generics on Ebay for a lot less. And they work great. Clean your nose with alcohol & let dry a few seconds just before you put them on and they will stay all night & day. You could go to one of those sleep studies and pay out the Wazoo even with insurance. Then have to buy a machine only to find out it is so annoying that you won't wear it! That is what my husband did. Boy did we look attractive, him with the big honkin mask, me & my nasal strip and tobaggon, that would scare off any burglar!!!!! Just try the few things I mentioned before going to any sleep study.. Don't eat at least 2 hrs. before bed if you can help it. If all fails then go for the sleep study, unless you have other major health problems you probably won't need it. They will definitely encourage the study & try to sell you one. That's money for them. GOOD LUCK, I WISH YOU WOULD EMAIL ME OR POST IF MY ADVISE HELPED OR WAS IT JUST MY ISOLATED SOLUTION THAT WORKED ONLY FOR ME...

I work at a neurology based sleep medicine center as a sleep technician. All of the symptoms you are describing suggest that you may be suffering from obstructive sleep apnea. As for the eating habits, it is recommended that you not eat or drink anything late in the evening. I would recommend you speak with your doctor and get a referal to a sleep center for an overnight study to either rule out or determine if you in fact due have this disorder.

It actually sounds like it might be acid reflux disease. Reflux disease is caused by the muscle at the top of your stomach not closing tightly enough to keep the stomach acid from seeping back up your esophagus. Often acid reflux will make a person choke and even vomit if the acid reaches high enough in the esophagus. The reflux can be exacerbated by the late meals. Sleeping with your mouth open is probably completely unrelated. I would try to sleep on your side to keep your mouth closed. I would see the doctor about the possibility of having reflux because if untreated it can damage your esophagus.

Usually I skim over the chapter in the book and/or the subject that the test is on for about 10 minutes (I don't know if you'd call that studying or not) and then go to sleep. For me, studying doesn't really work anyway because whenever you put the test in front of me--it doesn't matter if I had memorized the entire book--all recollection of anything to do with the test just falls out of my brain. Lol. :)

The coughing and throwing up a little sounds like reflux. I would check with your regular doctor before you go to the trouble and expense of a sleep study. Good luck.

From my own experience you have having reflux problems...This will cause you to cough if it comes up to your windpipe. This is a real bad situation.. If you inhale stomach juices you will have other problems develop.
The way you sleep will help. Head above stomach. No late night food, No late night drinking alcohol.

Tell these symptoms to a Doc. and get their recommendations.

Get it checked. It could be sleep apnea in which your breathing stops. The regurgitating for me is acid reflux (gurd). I take meds for it but it still happens almost every night unless I put pilows from the waist up under me and my head pillow under my head to elevate my upper portion. It helps sometimes. Also you can put blocks underneath the head of your bed to help instead.

See a doc. I'm not sure what that could be, but it sounds like sleep apnea, where you stop breathing for a few sec. It's what babies or small children are diagnosed with or it can be with people who just have breathing probs when they sleep.

Hope that helps.

It certainly appears as if an apointment with your PCP is in order.
It sounds as if you have several problems tha may not be life threatening. But can lead to health concerns later on.
Make an appointment.
