I have a Hoover Wind tunnel, and when I turn it on the house smells like rot. What is causing this?

I need to vacume, but cant because I am afraid of that terrible odor that smells like rotten something. Do you think if I change the filter in the vac it will cause the odor to go away?
Its a bagless vacume with a hepa filter.

You have the one with the self cleaning/ rotating / hepa filter.

Well if you have not noticed it, that hepa filter is supposed to constantly turn. If it is not, the motor tries to, heats up and smells like burning rubber.

The owners manual says to take it in to repair shop. I only had the vacuum for about 6 months. So I fixed it myself.
There is a multitude of screws you have to take out to disassemble the hepa filter. I mean like 20 or so. Keep track, because there are two different types of screws. There are even screws in the back to disassenble the front.

You also have to disconnect wires from the on/off switch and the motor. If you are not comfortable doing this, then take it in, otherwise keep track of everything you disassemble. Put it back together in reverse order.

The filter needs cleaning, Oddly enough I used my shop vac for cleaning the filter. Still had to bang it on the ground a little. That filter traps an amazing amount of fine particles and dirt.

I did some searching for you and found that others who had the same complaint solved the odor problem by changing the filter.

I also suggest you buy a can of Lysol Spray "Crisp Linen Scent" and lightly spray the filter every week or two. This will help eliminate some of the sources of the odors between replacements.
