Parts of Hayward are not the greatest (though not as bad as some parts of Oakland and Richmond). Its an older city with some gang activity. The Hayward Hills are probably the nicest part of the city.

It has a large mall (Southland Mall), a couple of BART stations, and is home to Cal-State University, East Bay (which is in the hills).

Moderate climate since its right next to the bay. Probably wouldn't be my first choice to live in the East Bay but if you're there temporarily, nice central location. Can make it to San Francisco or San Jose in less than an hour if there's no traffic. The rush hour traffic thru Hayward can be quite congested though.

Don't listen to the 1st guy, Hayward is OK, small, good mix of people. People over on the Peninsula are snobs anyhow. Hayward is a growing city, lots of new complexes, houses, and shopping centers.

I'm from the Peninsula. I have always disliked the East Bay, it is the inferior side of the Bay. Hayward is boring and classless. Hayward is where you live if you can not afford to live on the Peninsula. Did I mention it is cultureless there also. the best thing is that you will be close to the Coliseum and you can watch the A's play.
