I have a 1994 Infiniti J30. This is a new sound, just started today. The car is parked, keys are out, yet a loud hissing (kinda like a fan being on) sound is coming from what seems like infront of the glove compartment. Looked under the hood, couldn't really see anything or where the noise was coming from. Never had this problem before, have no clue what's wrong. Any ideas? Thanks.

I do not think it has anything to do with the temperature. It is def. not from over heating, I live in Southern Cali...the weather is not an issue. The engine is not hot. The car has not been on in hours and it is still making this noise. And this noise just started today.

Is the engine really hot? since your car is old (mine is too and does this) it could be that it's overheating, or just still really hot when you park so it's cooling down...

I don't know too much about cars, but this happens to me. Hopefully it isn't draining your battery, because I had that problem as well...

If the sound seems to be coming from in front of the glove box, between it and the windshield, under the dash, I strongly suspect that you have an air conditioning problem. What you are hearing is the fast evaporation of the freon in the evaporator. Try driving your car without the a/c, then shut it down and listen for the noise. If there isn't any, do it again with the a/c on. If the noise is there, have your system checked out before additional damage is done. The hissing noise usually indicates a restriction in the system, usually caused by the desiccant bag in the dryer bursting.

It's usually the fan. It is probably on because it needs to cool the engine down. Have you ever noticed it bfr? Have weather conditions changed recently?
