Most do, unless you've got one of those endearing holdouts against all modern technology.

I'm a college professor and I check mine everyday. When I go to conferences, I don't always have access to email, but usually I check my email every day and respond as soon as I can. However, I work with a couple of professors who have made it a habit to never answer email from home either because that's family time or they don't have email at home. I'm afraid I'm a little too obsessed with my email/internet to not have the internet at home!

My husband is a professor and he always checks mail on a workday and sometimes checks his mail on days when he's not working, but not always. I've had professors get back to me surprisingly quickly on the weekend, and I've known some who didn't even use the e-mail the school gave them.

It's never ok on a personal level. If it was a mass email to all the kids, then yeah, that's fine. I would confront some of the elders of the church (pastor, deacons, whomever) and let them know of what happened and what he said to you. Check him out on facebook, myspace, or any other social network site. Profiles can say a lot about a person. You did the right thing by suggesting he also copy you on the emails. If he's getting defensive so quickly, I would question his motive.

Many will not check when at home since they purposely keep work out of the home environment as much as possible. They are professionally obligated to check their email on work days, however.

The instructor I have right now told my class she checks hers each day except on the weekends when she's not working. So, I'd say that the majority check it only when they are at work.
