You'll need a BA in a science field like geology or biology, then a Masters and eventually a PhD in paleontology. The whole process will take you at least 8 years. There are jobs open with universities, museums and a few foundations. There are also a few private companies. It's hard work, often in tough conditions, and it doesn't pay very well, but it's endlessly fascinating.

Paleontology is normally offered as a division of Geology. It is advisable to attain your PhD in Geology specializing in Paleo to achieve the most success. Since paleo is a very specialized section competition is high, so you just can't stop at a Master's and hope to get a job. "Jobs" don't exist really in paleo. Its just academia and sectors or academia. It takes about 4 years to get a PhD. You can skip Master's (2-3 yrs.) if you feel confident but it generally not done.

The pros are that its so cool. The cons are that the competition is high and real, non academic jobs are few and far between.

I would recommend a traditional geologic background in addition to paleo. That way you have something to fall back on if the paleo openings get thin.
