Ok, so you are posting this under the hockey section, so you will obviously get all responses that say that hockey is better. I agree. Hockey is more physical and physically demanding. I will play devils advocate however. First of let me say that this comes down to whatever region of the world you live in for most people. I will also say that, in America, basketball is by far the more popular sport. Just look at hockey's opening night. Two of the biggest hockey cities in the country, Detroit and Colorado, failed to sell out!!! How amazing is that. Hockey can't even get a television deal with a major network. So now you can't even watch NHL hockey unless you live in an NHL city or you pay for premium cable/satelite and get the versus network. This is not going to help hockey gain popularity around the country. The NHL has also made some dumb marketing decisions. For example they have an outdoor game scheduled between the Sabers and Penguins (I believe) in Buffalo. This seems like a great idea... except they scheduled it on JANUARY 1ST!!! All of the country is going to be watching college football games, and this game will barely make it onto the sportscenter lineup. Even if it is the better game, hockey will continue to lose popularity unless they can somehow make it more appealing to Americans. Otherwise it is on the same path as the MLS... a side-note. I hate to admit it, but the NHL is in trouble. The NBA on the other hand gets great tv ratings every year, and has very little problem selling tickets and merchandise.

Basketball is my sleeping pill. Ignorant players, getting hurt by bumping into each other (I don't see how this could happen, there would fatalities at the mall during Christmas),with shoes named after them, doesn't really do it for me. Hockey is a team effort and that is why there are actual fights. In hockey, there is a sense of class. It has been statistically proved (can't find the website) that between the NHL, NBA, NFL, MLB, the NHL has the most intelligent fans.
I guess this is like comparing NASCAR (Natural Lite drinking fans) to Indy Car Racing (fans that drink beer that actually comes in a bottle).
I guess if the put a guy on top of the basket (guarding it like a goalie), basketball might be a little more fun.

BUCKS R #1: Last I checked, the tv ratings for the NBA were the worst all-time in the finals. How bout that ref scandal? The NBA isn't blossoming either. Oh, and btw, I have a great explanation why the home opener for Colorado didn't sell out: everyone was trying to get onto the Colorado Rockies world series bandwagon!!! No Avs games games will sell out until the Rockies finish their season.

Love Hockey. It is poetry in motion and the players are a lot more down to earth unlike basketball. Hockey is a sport that provides the fans with a wide range of action, spectatcular plays, speed, hits, goals, fights, and worth the price of admission. Basketball has become wait until the last 2 minutes then it gets good. I feel as though they take time off suring the game, especially with the huge score swings. They need to play the ENTIRE game like its the last two minutes.

Hockey.
I can actually play hockey, and I really suck at basketball. Also, I do like basketball but strongly prefer college over pro.
90% of pro basketball games are decided in the last 5 minutes of the game, which is boring.

hockey is the best sport ever. when was the last time a hockey player was shot and killed in a club or involved in something dumb like that, when was the last time a hockey player scored a goal and danced around obnoxiously.
aside from the sport itself being better/more exciting the players themselves are much better people then basketball and football players

In a word, Hockey is AWESOME. For the life of me I cannot skate to save my life, but the whole fast on ice thing, just thrills me to no end !!! Basketball is cool too, but nothing moves like hockey.

Basketball is lame. Football is lame...Hockey is the greatest sport ever played!!! Basketball consists of tall dudes running around a little court bouncing a ball...big deal. Football consists of a bunch of big goons running on a field for short periods of time and most of the time standing around for flagged plays. DELAYS DELAYS....Hockey is great because it is fast paced, hard hitting, skill driven game. Not only do the players need to know their position, systems, etc., but they also need to know how to skate.

I went to one baseball game, I didn't last more than 15 minutes before I got really bored and left.
oops I somehow read baseball instead of basketball lol..ok no, I've never seen a game of basketball ever!!
