Actually we have them here in the US too. I have seen two here in Missouri. They are solitary and nocturnal so are not seen often. The technical term is solifugid. They are spider relatives but lack venom. They use their huge jaws to bite and crush and cut their prey. Some species have jaws which weigh 25% of their total weight.

The e-mail from Iraq was a gag. The spider was held way out in front of the person so that it looked huge. The 35 mph running was also nonsense. They are about as fast as a spider the same size. They can deliver a nasty bite if provoked but are not aggressive. Preferring to run rather than bite.

Actually they are no more than about 5 inches long. They eat insects and similar creatures. They live in a harsh desert and like shade, so they will move toward any shady spot, like next to a soldier in Iraq.

Check out wikipedia for more info.
